Gene Winfield’s Get Together

Having fun at the Gene Winfield Get Together

Having a little fun at the Gene Winfield Get Together

Gene Winfield's recent Get Together at the Winfield's Rod and Custom Shop, outside of the small town of Mojave in Southern California. I was looking forward to Gene Winfields Get Together to see some of these custom cars, talk to the builders and owners of these rides.

There were legendary custom cars scattered about at Gene’s shop like The Reactor, Bubble Top Strip Car, and the Machete 600hp D50 Twin Turbo. Gene is best known for his custom cars, but Gene also has a need for speed; sitting out front was Winfield’s land speed race car, “The Thing.”

Walking around Gene's shop was like walking thru a museum with some older cars to the right as you walk through the gate heading towards the back, and behind the shop was a wrecking yard where some of the donor cars for other projects were scattered around. In the front was an indoor museum with lots of memorabilia from Gene's long history in the industry.

The custom cars were great, along with the cool rides. There were T-shirts, books, photos, and other cool stuff for sale. Gene was signing some of the memorabilia. There was also an area where pinstripers were creating pieces of artwork for sale.

The turnout was great, the rides were fantastic, and there were also many well-known builders that attended the Get Together like Chip Foose, Ian Roussel, and industry greats Ed "Isky" Iskenderian. It's always great seeing Isky at these events, and I'm sure he has as much fun showing up to these events as we do.

There were many awesome rides at the event, like the Dwarf Car. It was a scaled-down hand-built 1951 Chevy; it looked factory built. They use a Toyota Corolla engine, transmission, and chassis. All of the sheet metal work was handmade. The first Dwarf Car built by Ernie Adams was a 1928 Chevy sedan. After the first car, Ernie started building Dwarf Race cars. You can see these one-of-a-kind cars at the Dwarf Car Museum in Maricopa, Arizona. I would love to visit their Museum and shop one day soon.

Along with all the custom cars, a 1939 Plymouth Truck caught my attention. It's not very often that you see a Plymouth truck; this was the first for me. It was a barn find when the ride first surfaced.

Steve Force purchased the pick-up in 2010; it had a six-cylinder flathead and now has a 318 from a 1970 Plymouth, Torque Flight 727 transmission and a Mustang 2 front end. The body style looks great it was painted red, Steve did a great job aging the paint to the greenish color it is now. I like this truck, and I'm glad it was out here at the Gene Winfield Get Together.

There were many customs as you would expect, hotrods and other cool classics. I even have more of an appreciation for these custom cars after attending this event. I'm looking forward to another visit to the next Gene Winfield Get Together.
