It’s that good

There are two events during the year at Eagle Field Drags the season opener in May and one in October. There were a lot of similar competing events in the area this weekend, but as soon as you went through the gates, you would have thought this was the only event happening this weekend. The pits filled with participants, and spectators quickly lined the strip. You just knew it was going to be a great weekend.

The cars that race out at Eagle Field Drags are so diverse. You will see dragsters, muscle cars, trucks, and even motorcycles. You never know what will be out here racing, and it's not just the cars but the people that come out to race that make the event that much better.

One of the many interesting cars this weekend was a 1934 Dodge Coupe owned and built by Dev Berry. Dev was 16 and had a '31 Ford Roadster, but he had his eye on a 1934 fender-less Dodge Coupe body sitting on top of a bus at a junkyard. Dev 17 at the time sold the '31 roadster body for 200.00 and bought the '34 Dodge body for 250.00. Dev, now 67, had the 1934 Dodge Coupe for 50 years.

Dev put the Dodge body on the chassis from the '31, a modified Studebaker chassis along with a supercharged Studebaker V8 engine that was in the '31. Dev started racing the car in the 80s and ended up putting fenders on the Coupe and a 340 Mopar. Then, about 15 years ago, Dev broke the rear axle on the Dodge and the car sat until about a month and a half ago when he decided to get the Coupe back in running condition and bring it out to Eagle Field Drags

Bill and Cindy Le Fever brought out their dragster for the first time to Eagle Field Drags. Although when Bill and Cindy bought the dragster it had sand tires, it worked out perfect for them; they also race the dragster at the Avenal Sand Drags.

As with many that come out to Eagle Field Drags, it's a family endeavor, Bill and Cindy's son and grandson also race. Just like Dean with his 1962 Tempest Lemans, Dean's dad and brother are also into the race scene. I love the body style of Dean’s Tempest, the car ran fantastic. It was a fun one to see over the weekend.

Eagle Field Drags has a long-standing tradition of recognizing accomplishments in the race scene. Rocky Philips presented trophies to three racers for entering into the 4-second club, Franklin Azeveto, Jason Hogan, and Stephan Chase.

Legend Ed "Isky" Iskenderian had an appearance. Isky, a fan favorite, and at 100 years old and still dropping the flag, it’s always fun to see Isky at these events.

Its not only the cars, it’s the people as well that make this event so fun

The wheel-stander General Jerry Lee also had an appearance at Eagle Field Drags for the season opener. It was fun to see this part of hotrod history this weekend.

Many cars were racing over the weekend at Eagle Field Drags for the first time, and many of our favorites returned like Joe Hickenbotton's gasser Thunderbird. Joe's Thunderbird looks fantastic and is very entertaining to watch; this car gets up on two wheels on most runs.

It was also great to see a couple of Bentvalve car club members with their awesome Model A’s, Sean Clason in his 1931 Ford Coupe, and Philipp Meyer, in his 1930 Ford Model A Coupe.

Along with all the racing at Eagle Field Drags, you could see some cool cars at the car show, pick up something from the swap meet or grab a bite from one of the food vendors. With its old-school drag racing, Eagle Field Drags is one event you don't want to miss.
