Bias Ply Drags

Bias Ply Drags - Hemi Powered Ford Coupe

Gaters SCTA, a Southern California car club with a racing heritage dating back to ‘40s, hosted the Bias Ply Drags. The event unfolded on a 1/16-mile drag strip, also home to the Street Legal Dragway, at the Perris Auto Speedway.

South Gate Gaters SCTA, rooted in racing history, made their mark from the early days of racing on the El Mirage Dry Lakebed. Today, the resurgence of Gaters SCTA continues in the racing scene in Southern California, showcasing their passion for speed and classic automobiles.

The Bias Ply Drags, hosted by Gaters SCTA, is a yearly drag race event. The venue is for pre-1960 period-correct cars and trucks, keeping things authentic with a guideline against modern equipment such as contemporary wheels.

This commitment to nostalgia ensures a trip back in time, capturing the essence of early drag racing. The turnout at Bias Ply Drags was nothing short of spectacular, enthusiasts enjoyed a diverse array of vehicles at Bias Ply Drags.

Including beloved hotrods reminiscent of RPM Barona Drags, along with period-correct shoeboxes, trucks, and a few Tri-Fives. Many of our area favorites that we see racing at RPM Nationals Flathead Drags, TROG West Coast and RPM Barona Barona Drags were racing at this year’s Bias Ply Drags.

While most participants were from Southern California, there were also some who made the trip from places like Utah and Arizona. One standout was Andrew Hamilton’s 1929 Model A Roadster from Arizona, originally built in the late fifties, which particularly caught my attention.

What sets Bias Ply Drags apart is its unapologetic approach to racing, no trophies, no prizes. This year’s event was all about the thrill of the grudge match. Participants push their machines to the limit in a raw and unfiltered display of speed. The focus is purely for the passion of classic drag racing.

The afternoon racing carried over into the evening and with the track lighting it made for a unique and fun experience.

Within the Perris Auto Speedway complex, the Street Legal Drag Strip is just one facet of this facility. The Speedway boasts a half-mile dirt oval track that hosts a variety of races, ranging from sprint cars to the Night of Destruction Derby. Next to the primary track, enthusiasts can find a dedicated motorcycle and cart track, as well as an RC track. The Perris Auto Speedway is located at the Lake Perris Fairgrounds in Perris, CA, just outside Riverside.

Attending Bias Ply Drags you’ll get a prime view of the action from the grandstands. Located beside the drag strip, the car show area showcases an impressive array of classic rides and hotrods. Adding to the overall fun of the event, you could grab a bite to eat or drink from one of the food booths.

Bias Ply Drags is a fun family friendly experience for all. Whether you’re a devoted fan of classic drag racing or seeking a day filled with fun.
